Richard F. "Dick" Record, 68, died unexpectedly at his home on South Union Street, on the morning of Tuesday, July 15, 2008. He was outdoors, splitting wood, when he was overcome by a fatal heart attack.

A Cambridge native, Dick was born at Mary McClellan Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 3, 1939, the second child of Donald Bernard and Ruth Evelyn Baker Record.

He grew up in "Bucktown", aka Academy Street, and graduated from Cambridge Central School, Class of 1959. After receiving an Associate's Degree from Cobleskill State College, he returned to Cambridge, served in the Vermont National Guard and worked for several years at the Cambridge Lumber Yard.

On Aug. 1, 1964, he married his high school sweetheart, Linda McMorris Record.

In 1966, Dick began a career that brought him into the homes and businesses of many, many people in southern Washington County. It was that year that he purchased Faile's Dairy and became the beloved milkman. Two years later he purchased Pemrick's Dairy and added their customers to his route. It is impossible to count the quarts of milk that were delivered and the number of friendships that were formed in those 37 years. Dick said that he measured his business success not in terms of dollars, but in friendships. He made his final milk run on July 11, 2003. Dick said that he didn't miss the route but missed interacting with his customers.

When business changed at the Dairy, Dick became a part-time school bus driver for Cambridge Central School. He became a full time driver after his retirement from the milk supply business.

Along with running his own business, Dick was very involved in the Cambridge community. He was a member and trustee of the Cambridge Baptist Church; a member of the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years; Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 62 for 36 years; had his pilot's license and flew with the Cambridge Valley Flying Club and was very involved in the Cambridge Alumni Association. Dick served on the Cambridge Central School Building Committee for many projects including the science wing and the new bus garage. At the present time he was the president of CSEA at CCS and enjoyed presenting scholarship awards each year at graduation. A humble man, Dick did not expect recognition but was presented with many community awards.

Besides spending much of his time with his family, Dick loved the outdoors and caring for animals. He also enjoyed watching the skies and was fascinated with astronomy.

Along with his wife of 43 years he is survived by four children: Deborah L. Record of Cambridge, Richard T. Record and fiancée, Brooke Thomas, of Wilton, Donald E. Record and fiancée, Julie McGuire, of South Glens Falls and Christopher S. Record of Clifton Park; a granddaughter, Danielle Record of Cambridge; three siblings: Donald L. Record and Dolores "Dee" Romack, both of Cambridge and Joyce Sellers of Winchester, Mass.; his father-in-law, Edwin T. McMorris and wife, Elizabeth, of Troy; a brother-in-law, Thomas McMorris of Salem; a sister-in-law, Ann Cassidy of Bayville, N.J.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A service to remember and honor the life of Richard F. Record was held on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Cambridge United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Paul Baker, a personal friend, officiating.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to either the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department, Cambridge, NY 12816; the Cambridge Baptist Church or the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 52, Cambridge, NY 12816.
