In 2004 I researched the origin of CCS. As part of that research I found
lots of information about the one-room schoolhouses in the towns of
Cambridge, White Creek, and Jackson. This year, Marilyn Robinson, the
historian from the town of White Creek is doing similar research.
We need your help!
Below are the lists of the schoolhouses that Marilyn and I have identified
We've discovered that schoolhouses and school districts moved and
renumbered often. My list shows the numbers and locations based on an 1859
and an 1866 map. Please review and let us know of any additions and/or
corrections. We'd also love to have any class photos, schoolhouse photos,
class lists, and anecdotes.
Here is the results of my 2004 study

Since I'm asking for something, I feel it's only fair that I share
something in return. Below are photos of two one-room schoolhouses. The
District No 9 schoolhouse still stands on the northeast corner of Lake
Lauderdale. Charlie Ackley had some great stories about his days in that
schoolhouse in the early 1930's. The brick schoolhouse photo was labeled
"Jackson school" when I got it. The 45 stars on the flag indicate that it
was between the 45th state (Utah-1896) and the 46th state (Oklahoma-1907).
Question ... what is the school district number of CCS? Although, the
current Cambridge Central School building wasn't built until 1950
following the 1947 devastating fire of the Cambridge Union School, the CCS
district was actually formed in 1944 according to my research.
Hint #1 ... the school district number is on the plaque in the front foyer
of CCS by the principal's office. You must have walked by it a million
times.
Hint #2 ... the school district number was engraved in the stone above the
front porch on the Old School. It's clearly visible on the Old School
ornament we created last year. Betcha wished you'd bought one now, don't
you?
Hint #3 ... it's not school district number 1. That was the number of the
one-room schoolhouse in town of Cambridge on School Street which connected
South Union and Academy streets just north of George Robertson's yellow
house
Hint #4 .. the original one-room schoolhouse that used this district
number is the brick house owned by George Hastings on North Park Street
across from the early village cemetery
Hint #5 ... what do you get when you add 4 plus 6 ;-)
