BMC's Scott Nydam solos to win the pro men's Tour of the Battenkill in New York

It wasn’t a move meant to last, but when Scott Nydam, of BMC Racing, rolled across the line to win the Tour of the Battenkill pro men’s Invitational following a 112-mile breakaway — about half of it solo — the rider from Sebastopol, California, said the victory was a long time coming.

CAMBRIDGE — Thousands of spectators and cyclists gathered in Washington County Saturday for the amateur leg of the Tour of Battenkill pro-am bike race.

Event organizer Dieter Drake said the 100 km race through the hilly, rural towns of Greenwich, Salem, Easton and Cambridge drew approximately 1,541 participants and as many as 30,000 spectators, tourists who helped boost the economy of Washington County. He said over the course of the day there were 18 fields of competitors in categories based on age and skill level.

Speedy Nydam tough to stop

CAMBRIDGE - Scott Nydam joked while being interviewed that the only part of him that could move easily was his mouth.

That's not the way anyone else saw it. Nydam, of BMC Racing, broke into a lead group with Team OUCH's Bobby Lea just 34 minutes into the 124-mile Tour of the Battenkill pro invitational Sunday. He eventually broke loose from Lea, and the rest of the field never came near him, as the 31-year old California resident won the race in 5 hours, 16 minutes, 32 seconds.
