Evelyn Wallace Sutherland

 


Julia Evelyn Wallace Sutherland, 91, was taken into the arms of the Lord in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 11, 2009. She was at the Wesley Health Care Center where she had lived since 2000.

Born Tuesday, July 10, 1917, in Buskirk, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Augusta (Dodds) Wallace.

She grew up on the family farm in South Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge Union School, Class of 1937. She married Andrew Earle Sutherland in 1938. He died in 1999.

Along with raising four children, Evelyn worked as a nurse's assistant. She worked at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, Ellis Hospital in Schenectady and retired from Mary Sherman Hospital in Sullivan, Ind.

She enjoyed traveling, camping and spending the winter months in Florida after she and her husband retired.

Her four siblings, Lyndon, Stanley and Kenneth Wallace and Marion Murray died before her.

She is survived by four children: Richard Sutherland and wife, Marge, of Buskirk, Douglas Sutherland of Middle Grove, Craig A. Sutherland, Sr. and wife, Vicky, of Gansevoort, and Diane E. Martin of Fort Meyers, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Brown of Shushan; her former daughter-in-law, Linda Yager of Middle Grove; 11 grandchildren: Todd Sutherland, Tori LoCoCo, Tonya Brenner, Renee Harder, William and Scott Murray, Christina Powers, Justin Sutherland, Craig A. Sutherland, Jr., Jason Griffith and Kendra Martin; 14 great-grandchildren: Paul, Lauren, Sydney, Hayden, Kevin, Morgan, Brandon, Nicholas, DeAnna, Emily, Casey, Adain, Kayla and Noah and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Saturday, March 14, 2009, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge.

Rev. Robert Wallace, Evelyn's nephew, will conduct the funeral service at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow at Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge.
