Marcia Clark Raymond

Marcia Clark Raymond, 90, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vt., where she had lived since last August. She was the widow of Col. Charles W. Raymond, II, who died in 1989.

Born Friday, June 7, 1918, at the family home on Duell Hollow in the town of Cambridge, Marcia was the daughter of Emery and Delia Perry Clark. She graduated from Cambridge Union School, Class of 1934, at the age of 16. From 1935 to 1938 she studied in Albany with the New York State Department of Health, earning a certificate as a lab technician.

An independent woman, Miss Clark lived and worked in Kingston. Initially she was a lab technician at the Kingston City Lab and advanced to the position of senior bacteriologist. She was a member of Clinton Chapter No. 445 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Having known each other since childhood, being distantly related, Marcia and Col. Raymond reacquainted themselves after his wife Anita (Cervi) passed away. Marcia and the Colonel were married June, 1962.

Marcia was a very active member of the Cambridge community. She joined St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she was the treasurer for many years. She was an active member of Saint Martha's Guild and the Altar Guild. She loved books and reading. In 1955 and 1956, she attended SUNY New Paltz, taking classes in writing and reading. As a member of the Cambridge Book Club, Marcia was the "reader" for many years. She was also a member of the Cambridge Library. Gardening and flowers were another passion of hers. She was a member and past president of the Cambridge Branch of the Women's National Farm and Garden Club and was also active at the state level. She enjoyed knitting and hooking rugs. Marcia loved cats and was devoted to her furry, feline friends.

A stepson, Robert W. Raymond, and two brothers, Rear Admiral Malcolm Clark and Charles H. Clark, predeceased her. Survivors include three step-sons: Charles W. Raymond III of Colonie, Thomas M. Raymond of Portland, Ore. and Jonathan W. Raymond of Cambridge; a sister-in-law, Colena Clark of White Creek; two grandsons, Charles W. Raymond IV and Peter T. Raymond; four great-grandchildren; a niece; several nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Last week we laid to rest my step-mom of 46 years, Marcia, at West Point with my dad, Charles.

She was one day past her 90th birthday. It was a solemn, spiritual time in the old hometown, Cambridge, NY,and then the next day down on the Hudson River.

She wrote to me faithfully every week, and gave Dad probably another 15-20 years, after he retired in 1961 (and Mother Anita died a short time later).

Brother Bob preceded her in passing in 1995. Brothers Chuck and Jon and I will miss her dearly.
Tom Raymond
