Alan Baxter Bell

Alan Baxter Bell, 64, died at home on June 5, 2009. Alan, the son of Andrew A. and Dorothy Reynolds Bell, was born on January 13, 1945 in Presque Isle, Maine where his father was stationed during WWII. After the war, he and his parents moved back to the Reynolds family farm. Alan held memories of the family farm close to his heart. He was the oldest of nine children.

Alan graduated from Cambridge Central School in 1963 where he excelled in academics, wrestling, art and band. He went on to study at Cornell University. After two years, he chose to travel to California and explore parts of the U.S. He then returned to Cambridge. He worked at Mary McClellan Hospital, Ed Levin Jewelry, Hotel Cambridge as a bartender and later co- owner, and Eastern Castings.

Alan married Dorothy Renee Chester and together they had three children, Alan Baxter Bell II, Corinne Elizabeth, and Nathan Alexander. His beloved sons, Alan II and Nathan, tragically died together in a motor vehicle accident on May 26, 2006. Alan never recovered from this loss.

Cora has been his source of joy and the bright light in his life. He also was comforted by many of his sons close friends.

Alan had many interests and he was known for his love of firearms and all types of weaponry. He loved the outdoors and wildlife. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved books and reading.

In addition to his sons, his parents and his brother, Ted, predeceased Alan. Along with his daughter, Cora, he is survived by seven siblings and their families; Sylvia (Dr. Tom) Parsley, Bruce (Beth) Bell, Peter (Valerie) Bell, Rob (Jo Ann) Bell, Dr. James (Karen) Bell, Philip (Mollie) Bell, Virginia (Domenic) D’Andrea, his sister–in –law Kelly Bell, his nieces and nephews, several cousins, and his former wife, Dorothy.

To the end, Alan was proud to be a rebel and lived life on his own terms.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Monday, June 8, from 5 – 8 PM at Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main Street, Cambridge. There will be a funeral service at the funeral home at 10 AM on Tuesday. Cremation will follow.

Cora suggests that anyone wishing to make a donation in her dad’s memory do so to the Salem Fish and Game Club where Alan was a member. The address is P.O. Box 92, Salem, NY 12865.
