Arthur S. Peters

CAMBRIDGE - Arthur S. Peters, of Cambridge, passed away quietly in his sleep on Friday, June 12, 2009, at Glens Falls Hospital. The love of his life, Virginia Langlois Peters, his wife of 63 years, was by his side.

Arthur was born in White Creek, May 23, 1918. He was the eldest of the six children of James Peters and Ruth Thurber Peters of Ashe Grove. He is survived only by his youngest sister, Bonnie Krisanda, of Troy.

He was devoted to his children: Barbara Peters of Argyle, Ronald Peters, DVM of Greenwich, Mary Peters Hollister, CPA and her husband, Brian, of Whitehall, and Kenneth Peters and his wife, Marge, of Cambridge. He considered his grandchildren, Suzanne Shumway, Brian LeBarron, Christopher, Alycia and Adrien Hollister, and Hunter and Nicholas Peters, special blessings. His great-grandchildren, Ryan and Melissa Thomas, Lynsey and Leah Foster, James Shumway and Karigan Kipp, were his late-life joy!

A niece, Lodis Rintoul, of Greenwich, and Noel and Judy Hanf of Cambridge, were of special help and held in great affection by Arthur.

Arthur was a decorated World War II soldier who returned to Cambridge to make his life. In 1995, he was proud to march in the Memorial Day parade in the army uniform he had worn during World War II

Arthur is featured on this website as a CCS Serviceman.  Click HERE

He was a lifelong carpenter and mason. He is well known for his collection of old cars.

After his health forced his retirement at 65, he spent the next 25 years helping family and friends with mechanical, building and craft projects.

He received his high school diploma at the age of 87 at Cambridge Central School in 2002.

We owe his long productive life to the miracles of medicine and Arthur's intense desire to help others. He had his first major heart attack at 65, a hole in his intestine repaired at age 74 and a knee replacement at age 88.

He was a gentleman in the truest sense who always had a smile and thank-you for everyone, including those nurses who gave him injections and drew blood. Special thanks need to be expressed to the staff on 3 West at Glens Falls Hospital. The respect, special attention and extraordinary efforts that this team gave made his passing one of comfort and dignity.

Arthur would have wanted to thank family members, friends and everyone that he knew or worked for through the years personally for making his life "interesting!"

A memorial service to celebrate Arthur's life will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Salem United Methodist Church, 29 W. Broadway, Salem, with the Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating.

The family wishes to have everyone join them in the fellowship hall of the church following the service for light refreshments.

Memorial contributions in memory of Arthur may be made to the American Legion, Captain Maxson Post No. 634, 2106 state Route 22, Cambridge, NY 12816.
