Ann Pemrick Quinn, 88, passed into eternal life on Monday, October 14, 2024, holding the hand of her eldest son. She is now free of the Alzheimer’s disease that robbed her of her last few years with her family and loved ones.

Ann was born in Cambridge, NY to Frank and Reta (Donahue) Pemrick on October 4, 1936. The 2nd of 6 children, Ann attended Cambridge schools and received her nursing degree from the College of Saint Rose, followed by her master’s in nursing administration from NYU.

Ann refused to choose between having a family and having a career—she believed she could have it all, and she did. She married her beloved husband Leo J. Quinn in 1966 and then welcomed five children into their lives. Somehow she managed to balance the demands of their five children, some of whom were more demanding than others, with the demands of her career in nursing administration and education.

Her career spanned decades. Beginning as a staff nurse at Albany Medical Center, Ann became Head Nurse before leaving for NYU and a position as a Patient Care Supervisor and Instructor at St. Vincent’s in New York. She then served as a Community Health Nurse in Essex County, served as Adjunct Faculty at Adirondack Community College, Nursing Instructor at UVM, Continuing Education Consultant at SUNY Albany, and Adjunct Faculty at the Sage Colleges. By this time she was Associate Director of Nursing at Glens Falls Hospital—a position she held for nearly 20 years until reorganization opened up new doors for her as a consultant and ultimately Director of Staffing for Home Health Care Partners in Amsterdam. She was so committed to teaching the art and science of nursing and patient care that she continued working into her 80s.

The intensity of Ann’s commitment to her career was matched by her devotion to her family. She loved her children so much that it was hard for her to say no--their household was filled with dogs, cats, birds, lizards, and any number of other creatures even though she herself was “not fond” of animals. She was committed to Catholic education, so all of her children attended St. Mary’s and then Saratoga Catholic, where she served on the school board for many years. Ann was a doer, volunteering on committees, hosting fundraisers, and throwing infamous parties to celebrate basketball season, sometimes squeezing 100 people into her house for pizza. She made Christmas magical, braved blizzards to teach her kids to drive, edited college admissions essays, helped deliver litters of puppies, and watched a lot of youth and high school basketball—though she remains the only Quinn ever to play basketball in college.

In her later years, she relished being “Grandma” to her 7 grandchildren. During any given visit to Grandma’s, one could expect sweets, games, reading aloud, a trip to Mass, a scolding, a swim in the pool, and free range over a house filled with stories, memories and strange clothes from the 80s.

Ann is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Leo Quinn, her son Leo Quinn, Jr., daughter Kathleen Quinn (Matthew Sgambettera), son Timothy (Karolina) Quinn, son Matthew Quinn, and son Michael (Caitlyn) Quinn; grandchildren Grace Sgambettera, Gabriel Sgambettera, Eva Sgambettera, Anson Quinn, Sophia Quinn, Ada Quinn, and Sloane Quinn. She is also survived by her brothers John (Roxy) Pemrick, Dan (Patsy) Pemrick, sisters Reta M. Pemrick and Mary (Michael) MacLaren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Ann was predeceased by her beloved parents Frank and Reta (Donahue) Pemrick, older brother Frank Pemrick, Jr., and sister in law Marilyn K. Pemrick.

Friends and family may call from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, October 18, at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 E. High St., Ballston Spa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 19 at St. Mary’s Church, 167 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. Interment will immediately follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave., Saratoga Springs.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff on the memory unit at the Mansion at South Union in Cambridge, as well as those who cared for her during her short stay at Wesley Health Center. Donations to honor Ann’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York.
