Elaine and Bob Brown

Greetings CCS classmates from 1971 and 1972,

Bob and I would like to invite you to a reunion get together at our Shushan home on July 15, 2017 immediately following the all class union that is being held at the Cambridge American Legion that same afternoon.  The CCS Alumni committee has worked hard the last 13 years to host the annual event and would appreciate our support to continue its success.  Registration forms for the alumni picnic and golf outing can be found on their website:  www.ccsindains.com  .

Our social will begin at approximately 5:30 and end whenever the bonfire goes out.  We will provide light snacks, beer and wine.    We would welcome those who live local to provide a dish to share.  To assist in our planning we would appreciate your RSVP by June 30th.   We would also appreciate your assistance in spreading the word as we have no contact information for many of our classmates.

THE QUESTION WAS:

Jeff Ashworth, Class of 1967
Several of us, including Ken Gottry, are looking for an answer. There was a large yellow brick chimney near the south end of Asgrow warehouse #9. Circa 1960, nothing was connected to it. It was demolished in the 1970's. What was it used for when it was in operation?

THIS ANSWER FROM JANE WRIGHT

According the Bob's Sanborn Map Company's 1925 map, the chimney belonged to the milk shipping station owned by Sheffield Farm Company, inc. , a milk receiving and processing station. The small local farms would transport their milk there. The building originally came out to where the chimney was located. The chimney was used for heating water for washing and sterilization of the milk cans etc.

A few hundred feet south of this , the Dairymens League also had a building close to the railroad track. If I am not mistaken, this was a brick building that eventually was used by Russo's for meat packing. It burned , probably in the late 60's or early 70's.

Now the farms are so large, the milk trucks go to them to pick up the milk and a lot of it now goes directly to Boston.  Stewart's does buy some local milk.

ANOTHER ANSWER…KEN AIKEN
Jeff Ashworth and Ken Gottry were wondering about the old smoke stack that used to stand near the Asgrow buildings. It was located south of building #9 which now houses Bentley Seed Co. It was not on the Asgrow property but was part of the old milk processing plant which was later replaced by Agri-Mark(?). It could have been used when they manufactured powered milk. It was imploded by Martin Rogers in the early 70s. On his first attempt, he did not use enough explosives and it did not fall. There was such a big crowd that gathered to watch, that he went back a second time unannouced to finish the job. This info came by way of my brother Gerald so Ken you know how to contact him.. He also said Raz used to haul milk to the old milk plant and he may know more about it and what it was used for.

AND FROM GEORGE VIRTUE
Memories being what they are these days I wouldn't swear to it, but I think I recall seeing garbage being burned in that stack, possibly cafeteria milk cartons and the like from the school In the 50's. Can anyone confirm that?

FROM KAREN DUSHA McLEAN
The old Cambridge dump was at the end of Pearl Street (near the milk plant and brick tower) where the CCS refuse was sent also.
