I checked this out again and reread some of the comments. It's been a really long time since anyone has commented about anything here. After reading the comments on the cancellation of the Senior trips to D.C., I also remember that we were told ahead of time that we would be the last class to go to D.C. I may remember wrong but I also thought that one of the reasons was that the classes were starting to get larger. We did all feel that we sure were lucky that we were able to go. And we did have some fun times on that trip!!

I would like to send condolences to Mr.Baker's family. He was a great man. It was a pleasure having him as a gym teacher. If all men could be as nice and honorable as he was the world could be a better place. I think everyone will remember him as one of Cambridge's best coaches. The "play" was just an example of the extraordinary leadership he gave to the young men he coached. I hope everyone says a prayer for his family this has to be a very difficult time. God Bless! Lisa, Eric, Brady and Riley Hudson.
Hi....... The infamous picture of the bookstore and who are the students. You have them all right. Harold Dewey and Billy Potvin are the customers and Molly Harrington and Lois Virtue are the sellers. I have the original picture somewhere. Lois V Boice
I'd like to commend Fred Knapp for clarifying the Washington trip cancellation. I remember being told as a Sophomore "class of 61" that we would be the last class to take the trip Although much fun was had, side excursions taken, the Class of 61 had nothing to do with these trips stopping. Thank you--Joe Rouse--Class of 61
With regard to the class of 61 being the last to go to DC, there is a bit of a distortion of the facts over the years. The class of 62 was notified freshman year that there would not be a senior trip to DC nor anywhere else. The reason given was that the trips were too expensive and every year the students were out having car washes and other fund raising activities which the townspeople were required(?) to support. Needless to say we were disappointed, but it was not the class of 61 that caused the problem. In addition, I as a member of the class of 62 went to DC. My mother thought that I was a mature enough 17 year old and could go to DC by myself with $100. in my pocket. Amazing when you think about it, but it is true. I ended up meeting up with the class of 62 from Stillwater. I knew several of the ball players. Their chaperones were cool enough to let me partake in all of their tours and stay on the floor in one of the rooms as long as I paid for any extras. They even invited me to return to Stillwater on their bus for free. I had my picture taken in front of the capitol like all of the other classes, but I am unable to find the picture. I hope this information helps clarify the class trip mystery. Fred Knapp 62
I do not remember much about the store, but I have fond memories of selling ice cream in the cafeteria; mainly because I ate so much of the profits::))

I do remember that picture of the bookstore with Harold Dewey, Bill Potvin, Molly Harrington and Lois Virtue. That was my class running the bookstore. I remember taking my turn working it. It was fun doing that.
Hopefully we can get the cast together at the reunion and take another picture. It would be great to have now and then pictures. I think that's the only time I ever looked good in a hat.
Thanks, Ken and Pauline. Another pleasant addition to a very special website. Great job!
Some of the best friends I have in Cambridge I met while teaching (and directing plays) at CCS.
Great job Pauline and Ken. I don't know where you both get all of your free time to do such a great job. Enjoy reading about the old times. Special thanks to you Ken for sending me the pictures of the Laverty house where so many of us had such great parties. Thanks to Aunt Millie and Uncle Scotty Laverty along with Mr. & Mrs. Chase (playing cards up stairs) while we did our thing. Neil Laverty with his band and all of the 50 to 60 kids. Not to mention the fun Ann Chase, Nancy Stinner and I had organizing the parties. I say parties, because I think we had several. Ann or Nancy do you recall anything? Donna do you remember the chicken someone brought to the party? Thanks again Pauline and Ken for this beautiful page. Mary Bates

Bookstore picture with unknown girl. Might be Mary Harrington
If you keep calling him Kenny G, some people will be expecting him to perform at the reunion.
I think that is Bill Potvin. Does anyone know where either Potvin is now? I remember that the book store was owned by the student counsil, but the classes must have taken turns running it. As class treasurer I remember doing deposits for the book store. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my aging brain I seem to think that either the eigth or ninth grade actually operated it.
Pauline, I checked out the new link. Ken, nice article and thanks for bringing back the memories. Yes it was nice to have those school book covers but I seem to remember lots of books covered by paper bags. Do you remember what class ran the bookstore or how they picked students to work there?
Hi, Ken, good work! The photo of the "bookstore" brings back memories of the part of the corridor where it was located. There was a ping-pong table nearby where I learned a killer serve. Still enjoy bringing that out once in a while, serving with the speed of light to someone who thinks they're gonna whip me, then walking away enjoying their flabbergasted look. Hee hee.
I remember paying 25 cents for a tablet of paper at the CCS store that had the orange cover and I believe a picture of an Indian. Is the other gal in the picture, Molly Harrington?? Thanks Kenny G for making this old brain of mine work.Keep the memories coming.
Ken, this is a neat addition to our website - looking forward to more articles and pictures. Pauline, attaching this comment page was another brilliant idea. Thank you!!!
The bookstore was right outside my Senior homeroom ...Miss Richard's class. I, like many others, spent my time selling book covers, paper and pencils. Thanks Ken, for reminding us! |
