Susan Briggs Rouse

Cataumet  MA  Susan Briggs Rouse, 75, long-time Cataumet resident, died Wednesday night (12-29-2021). She was born to James Lake and Rita Nolan Briggs in Cambridge, New York, the younger of 2 children. She had lived in Montreal, Coastal Maine, and Cambridge, Massachusetts before finally settling in Cataumet. Susan attended Wellesley and Wheaton colleges, where she majored in psychology.

Susan (never Sue) is survived by her husband Jim Rouse, her three children and their spouses: Nolan Kitfield and Andrew Vernon of Northfield, Massachusetts, Ned Kitfield and his wife Kelly McCue of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Joshua and Karey Kitfield of Dallas, Texas. She leaves three grandchildren (who called her Grammy), Lily, Sam, and Cole, who were loved deeply by her and loved her in return. She is also survived by her big brother Terry Briggs, his wife Sarah, and their children, Emma and Jasper.

Susan was passionate about her family above all things, but also led a life filled with many capabilities, interests, and accomplishments. She and Jim built and operated a furniture manufacturing business where she filled many roles, from accounting to leadership, and actually creating furniture with her own two hands. Susan and Jim also ran the Cataumet Club Camp for more than a decade. She was proud to ensure that hundreds of children got to experience the same joy from camp that her kids and grandkids had. Susan created a special place in Cataumet – the deck on their home on Winsor Road was always filled with friends, neighbors, and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the ALS Association www.als.org/donate in memory of Susan's mother Rita Mary Briggs, who died from ALS in 1990.
