Katherine R. Hopkins

Katherine Hopkins SARATOGA SPRINGS — Katherine Regina Hopkins of East Avenue passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001 at Saratoga Hospital. She was 44. Born May 27, 1957 in Cambridge.

Katherine was predeceased in death by her mother, Eva Nadeau Hopkins and her father, Thomas Hopkins, both of Cambridge.

A 1975 graduate of Cambridge High School, Katherine received her B.A. in music education from Skidmore College in 1981, and completed her master’s degree at Castleton State. A music educator at Schuylerville Central School for more than 20 years, Katherine not only taught a variety of music classes, but served as instrument director, and until recently, vocal director of the Schuylerville Senior High Chorus, and was musical director for the school’s last three productions. She lent her many talents in other areas as well, acting as advisor for both the Quiz Team and the Ski Club. As a composer, Katherine’s original works are well known throughout the area. She wrote the score for the 1999 Round Lake Auditorium Production of “The Freak” and was working on the musical “Revolution” in conjunction with The Saratoga Battlefield. Active with Schuylerville Community Theater, she served as Musical Director for “Annie” and played her instrument, the French horn, in the orchestra of several SCT productions.

Katherine’s unique accomplishments began early; at an Albany local, she was the first woman to obtain an electrician’s card; at the Saratoga Race Course in the early 1990’s, she became the first woman bugler in the country, and performed in that capacity for three seasons. She was a licensed pilot, vocal tutor, French horn instructor, avid gardener, amateur chef, staunch advocate of animal rights — to name a few of her interests.

Katherine is survived by her life partner of 10 years, Teri McDowell, also of East Avenue; a sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Rick Langlois of Cambridge, and their children, Kelly and Wesley; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Paige Hopkins of Kacsonville, Fla. and their children Alexanne and Chad; and a brother and sister-in-law Timothy and Donna Hopkins of Hoosick Falls, and their children, Bridget and Jeremy. Katherine also leaves beloved Aunt Peg Hopkins of Cambridge, beloved cousin Pat Hayden and husband Don of Hoosick Falls, and their children, Dawn Hayden and Robert Kennedy, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to her family, Katherine leaves behind a multitude of students, friends and colleagues whose lives have been touched and forever changed by her gentle yet powerful influence.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave. in Schuylerville. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery. A scholarship is being established in Katherine’s name to assist aspiring musical students in their continuing education. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Schuylerville Central School, 14-18 Spring St., Schuylerville, NY 12871.
