89, of
Cambridge,
entered into
eternal life
with his
Lord Jesus
Christ on
Sunday
evening,
March 6,
2016 at the
Center for
Nursing and
Rehabilitation
at Hoosick
Falls.
John
was born at
Content Farm
on June 14,
1926 in
Cambridge
and was the
son of the
late Henry
S. Bates,
Sr. and
Seraph
Wallace
Bates. He
was a 1944
graduate of
Cambridge
Union
School.
Upon
graduating,
John
immediately enlisted
in the U.S.
Navy
together
with his
brother
Henry,
serving in
the Pacific
theater
during World
War II.
Following
his
discharge
from the
Navy, he
attended RPI
in Troy and
studied
electrical
engineering
for 3 years.
John worked
for Regan
Washer &
Appliance
Co. in Troy
for 32 years
until 1977
and he then
went to work
for
Freihofer’s
Baking Co.
in Albany as
a Project
Engineer,
retiring in
the 1990’s.
John was a
member of
the Coila
Church where
he had
served as an
Elder and
Trustee for
many years.
He was also
a member of
the Captain
Maxson Post
634 American
Legion in
Cambridge; a
member of
the
Cambridge
Valley Lodge
#481 F&AM; a
member of
the
Cambridge
Vol. Fire
Dept. and a
member of
the
Adirondack
Mountain
Club.
He had many
interests
which kept
him busy if
he was not
working.
John loved
hiking and
canoeing in
the
Adirondacks
and enjoyed
bobsledding
in Lake
Placid.
John enjoyed
traveling
having
traveled
around the
world and
participated
in Habitat
for Humanity
in Haiti &
Nicaragua.
At one time,
he completed
a 100 mile
horseback
ride from
Calgary to
Banff. John
was a
builder of
many things
which
included
furniture
and barns
and he loved
to read.
In addition
to his
parents,
John was
also
predeceased
by his first
wife, Ruth
Wallace
Bates and a
brother,
Donald
Bates.
He is
survived by
his second
wife of 25
years, Jane
Newhard
Nichols
Bates; his
children,
John W.
(Nancy)
Bates, Jr.
of Troy,
Jolene R.
Bates of
Irving, TX,
Jhvonne
(Joseph)
Higgins of
Valley Falls
and Justyn
(Cindy)
Bates of
Latham; a
step-son,
Joel
(Kimberly)
Nichols of
Cambridge;
his twin
brother,
Henry S.
Bates, Jr.
and a
sister,
Seraph May
Elliott of
Syracuse.
John is also
survived by
11
grandchildren,
5 great
grandchildren
and many
nieces and
nephews.
Calling
hours will
be Thursday,
March 10,
2016 from
12-2 pm at
the Coila
Church, 93
State Route
372,
Cambridge.
A funeral
service will
begin at 2
pm at the
conclusion
of the
calling
hours.
Interment
with
military
honors will
be at
Woodlands
Cemetery in
Cambridge,
and a
reception
will follow
at the Coila
Church.
