A bright light went out when a great man, Daniel T. Flynn, passed away at his home on Long Island on September 18 from ALS.
Dan was born at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, NY and graduated from Cambridge Central School, class of 1976. Dan was a graduate of the State University College at Oswego and had jobs in local and NYS government. He was a software engineer at IBM and previously worked in the NYS Departments of Tax and Finance. He retired as the Assistant Director of Enterprise Applications at the NY State Office of the State Comptroller. Besides being very intelligent and a terrific problem solver, Dan always demonstrated integrity and honesty in every aspect of his life.
The youngest of nine children, Dan often remarked about how much he loved spending time with his family. Music was always an integral part of Dan’s life, and he loved listening to records and singing with his family from a young age. He was a gifted songwriter and excellent guitarist and brought much joy to many through his music. Dan was a choir director at St. Monica’s Church in Johnsonville, a musician (guitarist) at St. Patrick’s Church in Cambridge, and a musician (guitarist) at Transfiguration Parish in Schaghticoke.
He had a loving marriage to Bette Lee Foley-Flynn for nearly 21 years, and they were extremely devoted to each other. They were each other’s biggest cheerleaders every day of their lives. His brilliant smile and sparking blue eyes lit up every room he entered. His sense of humor was contagious. Dan was the best listener and very empathetic. It was not unusual for someone to break into tears while talking to him because he reached people at such a deep level.
His children and grandson were the lights of his life, and he was very proud of each of them. They meant everything to him. He loved deeply. He is survived by his wife Bette Lee Foley-Flynn, children: Sarah Flynn, John Flynn, Will Karle, Laura Jardieanu, and grandson Nicholas Karle. Dan has surviving siblings Patricia Hall (David), Dennis Flynn (Nancy), Mary Gifford (Steven), Kathy Galluzzo (Tom Carringi). Dan was predeceased by siblings Willard (Lois), Michael (Patricia), John (Sheila Rowlands) and Timothy (Jeanne). He has numerous nieces and nephews and took great pride in their achievements as well as those of his children.
Dan enthusiastically immersed himself in everything his children were involved in and was a soccer and baseball coach. He loved animals, especially dogs. Some of Dan’s most satisfying volunteer work was fostering two breeding dogs, Halsa and Evita for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
Dan was very religious and we know that due to his amazing kindness and goodness, he will be an angel watching over us.
Dan’s wake will be at 11:00 a.m. followed by his funeral at 12:30 p.m. at Transfiguration Parish in Schaghticoke, NY on October 11, followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Cambridge, NY. The family would appreciate funeral flowers, donations to the ALS Foundation or to a local Hospice organization.
