George Joseph Carey

George Joseph Carey died suddenly Sunday, June 24, 2012, at his home in Stuart FL. He was born in Cambridge NY on May 29, 1961 to Daniel Anthony Carey and Mary Ella Arnold (Casey) Whitten.

George graduated in 1979 from Cambridge Central School where he had served as president of the student council. He was an avid baseball player and loved playing his guitar. A contractor with 32 years of experience (drywall finishing), George was considered an expert. One of the homes he used to be proud to tell he worked on was that of Celine Dion. George had many lifelong friends. If he was your friend then you always knew you could count on him to lend an ear and bring a smile to your face, even when you were the most down. He always had a story that could make you laugh.

George spent many years in Cambridge, NY and Danbury, CT until he moved to Stuart in 1996. He used to joke about being able to be semi-retired at the age of 35 as he was quite often able to stop work in the early afternoon and enjoy golfing or fishing or just sitting on the beach. He wouldn’t have traded his life for anyone’s and he took pride in the fact that he was near his mother and able to help her when she needed it.

George was predeceased by his father in 1985, his stepfather, James Austin Whitten in 1999, his niece Heather Finning Spendiff on May 9, 2012 as well as his maternal grandparents, Harry and Jennie (Loveland) Arnold and paternal grandparents, Joseph and Emma (Distefano) Carey.

He is survived by his devoted mother, three brothers: Leonard Finning (Maureen), Daniel Carey (Suzanne), Alan Carey (Mary), two half brothers: Joseph Carey (Victoria) and Nicholas Carey, three sisters: Lorna Finning, Linda Kelley (Pat), Lari Ann Hayes (Mike), two half sisters: Diane Carey and Janice Carey as well as three step brothers: James Whitten (Sue), Robert Whitten (Maria) and Richard Whitten (Vanessa). He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins as well as his faithful companion, his dog Casey Mae.

If ever the phrase “I did it my way” fit anyone, it was George. He lived life his way every moment of every day. His friends say that when they grow up (or come back) they want to be George Carey. Rest easy, dear George and please, tell God we say Hi. We’ll all be along shortly and look forward to the day when we can laugh with you and hold you again.

The All County Funeral Home in Stuart, Florida will be in charge of arrangements. There will be no calling hours at present, but there will be a memorial service at a later date.

If desired, donations may be made in memory of George to Love and Hope in Action (LAHIA), 1760 SE Salerno Road, Stuart FL 34997. (Please be sure to say its on behalf of George Carey.)
