Bruce W. Bracken Jr.

The Cambridge Central School District community said goodbye to one of its biggest boosters Wednesday, September 8, 2004

Bruce W. Bracken Jr., 55, died Saturday, September 4, 2004 from a cerebral hemorrhage at Albany Medical Center. The Cambridge board of education member of at least five years, and this year’s president, was memorialized at a funeral Wednesday afternoon that drew throngs of people to United Presbyterian Church .

District Superintendent Frank Greenhall said this was the second hemorrhage Bracken suffered in several years.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ackley Bracken, his father, Bruce W. Bracken Sr., of Sebastian, Fla., a daughter, two sons, two grandsons, two sisters, two brothers, a stepmother, and several in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Greenhall said Bracken, who was active in the community outside of school, never attended a board meeting where he didn’t comment on the great things the district was doing. He was a true supporter, Greenhall said, and the district where he was an alumnus was a big part of his life.

“He told me once that two of his proudest days last year were watching his grandson going off to kindergarten at Cambridge and handing his son his diploma,” Greenhall said.

District Administrator Wesley Clark said Bracken wasn’t just a great supporter of the school, but also a great role model for everyone in the district.

“He was just a person of extremely high moral values and integrity and he wanted everybody to be extremely forthright, honest and above board,” Clark said. “That was one of his major agenda items.”

Bracken, who was a construction superintendent with Kubricky Construction in Glens Falls, was also a musician. He played trumpet with the Cambridge Central Band and Greenhall said he sat in with the pep band where he helped cheer on students. Greenhall added that he was always one to help out whenever he could.

“You could never say enough nice things about Bruce,” he said.

The Brackens are creating a scholarship in Bruce Bracken’s name and Greenhall said donations can be sent care of the Cambridge District Clerk to 23 West Main St., Cambridge, NY 12816.
