My favorite fall memory in Cambridge, other than leaves is CCS football!!!

My mom is turning 60 this year and we're throwing a party.

Karen Hudson VanDusen -  Class of 1973 - Stony Creek, NY
Hi, Pauline - just wanted to comment on Barbara Sherman's passing. She was my favorite English teacher, (yes, that includes my mom!), and I still have (and use) the dictionary she gave me when I graduated from CCS. It was when I was in Mrs. Sherman's class in 8th grade that I knew I wanted to teach English, and I have her to thank for her presence, patience, poise, and profound love of the profession that made me the teacher I became. I retired this past June after 38 years of teaching high school English and can only hope that she knows what she meant to me, both personally and professionally.

Thanks,

Mrs. Sherman’s obit has been published in the Glens Falls Post Star.

If you grew up in Cambridge in the 50's, you knew the smell of burning leaves at the edge of the street.  You remember giant Elm trees whose leaves were so much harder to rake than the glorious Maples and didn't burn as well.  You remember how beautiful September and October were and how grey and cold November was.  In the fall of 1956 Cambridge went from 6 man football to 11 man football and all of the great athletes from the class of 57 did Cambridge proud with the coaching of Carson Fuller.  There was the Halloween parade at the school and party in the gym afterward.  I remember Dan and Mike Severson in the parade as two giant packs of cigarettes and they won first place (1954, I think).  That was also the year that we awoke to six inches of snow the following morning, November 1.  Quite the surprise as there wasn't quite the weather forecasting of today.  We went off daylight savings time at the end of October and I can remember football practice the first week in November when many of the good citizens of Cambridge that followed the team would park their cars with the headlights shining so we could finish practice.  Needless to say, we all remember Cambridge as a magical place, the memory of which is deeply etched in our minds.  Stay healthy and safe and be thankful for the memories.

October here in Cambridge means leaves and football.  My son, a member of this year's version of Cambridge cubs is getting ready for the last game of their season.  Three  nights a week the boys practice for two hours,  full contact.   The coaches all members of Cambridge teams of the past have done a great job even if their record only includes two wins and 3 losses.    Going to top a exciting weekend here in Cambridge as my daughter will get in on the fun to watch the varsity homecoming  game vs Whitehall....nothing  like Cambridge on the fall

One thing I really like in the fall is going to a Cambridge football game , sitting in the stands or standing at the fence, and looking east at the beautiful scenery including Two Top mountain.  Saturday is Homecoming, and the leaves are spectacular for the first time in a couple of years.

Patricia Woodcock Anderson. Class of 76Norco, CA

Fall on Colfax the Woodcock place. The best memories I have is hiking to the top of the highest hill on the farm and just letting the warm fall breeze wash my troubles away for a little  while.  Hearing the wind push up the valley, the full color of the leaves, the sense of peace. I would sit there for hours sometimes.

I now live in Cali. Been out here 35 years. We do have fall. Some trees  do change color even in SoCal.  I live in Norco. Horse town USA! We have the Santa Ana winds in the fall. Not quite  the same but they remind me of home.

Linda Finning Kelley, Class of 71.  Springfield VT
Each season carries its own special flavor but I must confess that fall is my favorite.  I love the colors, the crisp morning air and eating fresh apples.   It doesn't hurt that I also happen to celebrate my birth month in the fall.  Most people get a day....I truly do stretch it for the month.  :-)

Tracy Odell Woodell  Class of 1988  Pensacola Florida

I live on the Gulf coast now so I look forward to Greek Fest here, and Pumpkin

Frappes. Back home in Cambridge the fall leaves which we do not have here in

Pensacola, and as a kid jumping in the pile of leaves that my dad had just

racked. Good Times.

Joni Keys Rhodes, 1971, now living in Schuylerville, for the last 20+ years!
Memories of fall!  Ahhh raking the leaves out onto the street and then burning them and the wonderful scent they gave off!  I am sure the memory of leaves burning is better than the actual smell!

Fall for me is getting ready for The Special Olympics Polar Plunge, in Lake George on the third Sat. of November!  My son, now 18 was born with Down Syndrome (October is Down syndrome Awareness Month, too!) and Autism.  He cannot participate in regular sports so we go to Special Olympics Aquatics and Equestrian training and competitions!  This costs the athlete and their family nothing; in fact the coaches are all volunteers!  The Polar Plunge is their biggest fundraiser and it is a lot of fun.  I will have gone into Lake George 9 times as of this year, Nick is on his 3rd try, he reaches the water and stops from the cold!  Special Olympics has meant so much to both of us, we have made many new friends and Nick is so proud of his medals and ribbons.

I am attaching a link to our Team (Freezin' Friends) page, in case anyone would like to join us in our dip (it is a great bucket list item!) or make a donation.  At the very least you can see a picture of Nick and some of our team!  It is a fun day, with lots of other activities, coffee, food, face painting, chair massage, music, ice cream eating contest and more, so stop on up and take some pictures and hold our towels for when we get out, Freezin' our butts off!

Thank you for reading!!!

Kathy Kelleher, class of 1980.  Best fall memories- playing field hockey in the 1970's in our kilts.  Also, the smell of wood smoke in the crisp air.  Walking in the village with my best friend, Michelle, to the bakery, etc. and then back to school to watch football or soccer games.
Other favorite fall memory of the 1970's was the enormous crowd of kids who came to the village for egg throwing, rotten vegetable throwing, shaving creaming and toilet papering each other on Halloween.  My husband said (also a CCS alum), "it was the best time of the year."
