“NEWSLETTER  MATERIAL GATHERING IDEAS”

IDEA # 1
I came up with an idea to get some “stuff” for the newsletter after reading a topic on Smoke Signals.  How many of you can name a store/business that you/your family patronized?  I am going to ask that you give your full name, maiden name included, your Class Year and where you are living now.  If you neglect to do so, I will post just the information you choose to give.

John Henry’s…the only place to get those white wool cheerleader socks and blue jeans!!!  My grandkids are amazed that there was only 1 or 2 brands of Boys/Mens jeans and NO women’s jeans.

Arno Wilson's  ..our first tv...black and white of course.

Hmm - stores patronized in Cambridge - hmm. The folks firmly believed and lived up to two rules (1) Patronize customers (2) Buy from locally owned businesses. We regularly ate at "The Diner", the Cambridge Hotel, "Mamma's" (under all its names over the years), occasionally at the Brick before it was torn down and often at King's snack bar by Lake Lauderdale - all were Pelgas customers. Loved eating pecan pies and éclairs from the Bakery on Main Street, a Pelgas customer. We stored meat in McWhorter's Locker and bought groceries from the new McWhorter's grocery store once it opened (and probably at his original store as well before it burned but that fire occurred in my pre-school days), the Onedia across the street from our store and occasionally the A&P  - all were Pelgas customers directly or indirectly. Family doctor was Dr. Cole, drugs and out-of-town newspapers were bought from LeGrys then Cooper's after Cooper bought it, had The Washington County Post delivered (and the folks also ran their store's ads in it on occasion), hardware from Rubino, milk from Fail's Dairy, bought gasoline from Ayer's Texaco, from the Flying A on Main & Union as well from Moor's Garage - all Pelgas customers. Our Dodge trucks were often repaired at Moor's as well as at Horace Maxwell's in Coila, again all Pelgas customers. Dad and I got our haircuts at Costello's, a Pelgas customer. We did buy some of our clothing and shoes from Shapiro, again a Pelgas customer.  Can't recall the owner's name but I did buy some toys from the five & dime on the East end, there not being one on the West End. And  that is what I recall on a first pass but ………

And of personal news in general: As of 2 June 2017, I am officially retired for a second time

IDEA # 2

Jeff Ashworth, Class of 1967
Here’s something that might spark newsletter feedback from CCSers. Most of us at one time or another have met people who weren't from Cambridge but had recollections from just passing through. My most recent is a fellow who works for Amtrak and grew up in Waterford. When I told him I grew up in Cambridge, he immediately recalled the Hotel Cambridge, Home of Pie a La Mode and King's Bakery. Sort of interesting: what is distinctive about Cambridge in the minds of visitors. Just a thought
