Linda Lufkin Taylor, Class of 1962

I'm trying to stir up some interest in the class of 1962, having a brunch on the Saturday morning of reunion weekend.  It will be at the VFW Post 7291 in Greenwich.  the only 2 class members "lost" are Al Broadhead and Tom Ayers.  Like everyone else, we have some who never respond but I don't consider them "lost".  :)

Oliver Perry, Class of 1959

Hello Pauline,

I am very sorry to learn about the passing of Bill Grady. I just sent a note to his brother Mike using an e-mail address that I received several years ago. Hopefully it is still current.

Over the years my high school nick name of  "Jolly Ollie”   has remained in place. I don’t remember who was first to refer to me as Jolly Ollie. (Maybe Mr. O’Connor) The nick name had been no doubt used sparingly from time to time by a few friends, and maybe some teachers, but its  predominance  and permanence resulted directly from a conversation that I had with Bill Grady on the school bus on our way home.  I told Bill that the next morning I was scheduled to make the morning announcements over the school PA system. It turned out to be the only day that I ever made the morning announcements. Mr. Bowler instantly became quite upset with my free wheeling delivery which began with, "Good morning, this is Jolly Ollie with today’s news!”

My whole pitch had been prepared in my mind several days in advance. Bill Grady was the only person that I remember ever sharing my announcement plans with. (Mr. Bowler later thought it was a “Senior” plot and immediately locked the seniors in their homerooms after he lit into me in the main office. I have been told that he lectured every senior about how NOT to behave when making announcements and may have added that any more tricks would result our senior trip being canceled. I was curtailed in the office when all of this supposedly happened. All of the seniors had no idea what he was talking about.)

It all began on the afternoon bus ride home when, sitting next to Bill Grady, I asked Bill, “What if I said... on tomorrow's morning announcements? Bill laughing encouraged me to deliver the announcements in the style of a sports announcer that we both listened to, but he didn’t think that I had the guts to actually do it. I am not sure that I was actually planning to carry out my plan until Bill indicated that he didn’t think that I had the courage to do it. I thought to myself that I might not be able to hit a baseball anywhere near as far as Bill could, but by golly I was not gutless. Bill’s challenge stuck in my mind and gave me the courage to go through with my plan the next morning. Bill Grady was the only person in CCS that morning who was expecting there might be a change in the way the announcements came over the classroom speakers. He was not disappointed. It did leave a ripple in the start of the day.. but the reception I received from Mr. Bowler quickly dispensed any joy I had. The “jolliness” disappeared the minute I turned from the mic and saw his face.

So I got yelled at by the principal and labeled with a name tag that never left me. And, it was all because of Bill Grady.  May He rest in peace… one of the best baseball players I remember from our era..one of Mr. O’Connor’s favorites.

Yours,

Jolly Ollie

Our annual scholarship drive is the month of March each year.  No tricks, no gimmicks, nothing to attend, no cookies or cakes to buy!  We are simply asking you to send a check for $5.00 made out to the CCS Alumni Scholarship Fund to the Association.  Remember you are simply being asked.  This is not a minimum or a maximum, but it is a good place to start.  Any amount you send will be greatly appreciated.

I am desperate for some news!!! There has to be something going on in your lives that you would like to share with us!

Hope to hear from you soon!!!
Pauline
