DECEMBER 13, 2015

Dear CCS Alumni and Friends, It seems that everyone is busy with the events of the season so input for the newsletter has been very light.  HOWEVER, I am very grateful for those who did participate.

This year’s CCS Alumni Basketball Tournament will be held Saturday December 26th from 1pm to 8 pm. Teams will be required to play two games as this year the tournament will be held in one day. Players are asked to be at the gym by 12:30pm for registration. A Holiday party will follow the championship game at Benson's at 8pm.. Everyone is invited to the holiday party so come out and enjoy the this event. Public is invited to both events. As usual there is a player fee, and a separate fee for non-players to attend after-party.

Speaking of Mr Dawson ... The following is something I picked up a little over 10 years ago:  When we were planning our 40th Reunion for 2004, which went off well at the Legion, including Joan (+), as usual helping with the details (we miss her so), I thumbed through the 64 Chieftain looking for images of INDIANS.  Surely we on the staff back in '63-'64 would have cut-and-pasted in, and Photo-Shopped in (opps, sorry, decades ahead of myself) numerous pictures, drawings, paintings, etc of the honorable Redman, our mascot. But noooo.  Take a look if you have a copy at hand. I found ONLY a photo or two of the cheerleaders dressed as Indian maidens (guess that wouldn't fly today), and a photo of Mr. Dawson's new artwork on the floor of the brand new gym. We didn't even include a feature of that particular piece itself. Duh!  (I'm BCCing members of the Chieftain staff for very late noogies.)  Prayers to the Dawsons from the Class of 1964. Please pass this along to him. Thx, and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Jeff Ashworth, Class of 1967

Pauline - Here is a memory jog for old timers.  I think there were a couple of places in the vicinity of Cambridge where there were Burma Shave signs alongside the road.  One was between Ed Andrew's pumpkin patch and the Fiesta (now Benson's) along the southbound side of old Route 22.  The other may have been on the long straight stretch next to the railroad just south of Johnsonville on the southbound side of Route 67.  Anyone else recall any?  Remember what the signs said?

Dave Thornton, Former CCS Teacher, commenting on the passing of Dave Wilkie

Dave was a remarkable talent.  Many locals know this better than I. Was very supportive of OCOCS (summer concert series) and a very good commander of the local Legion Post.  What I heard was that he was welcome every fall at the hunting camps because he had an unfailing sense of humor.

A really bright, home town guy.  Sorry to lose him.

Another Wilkie thought: How Cambridge came to host a concert by THE United States Marine Band (oldest and finest band in the Nation).

When the Times-Union cancelled their usual sponsorship of the Marine band's annual tour of the Northeast, their booking Sgt. contacted me.  This was because I had been working with the Cambridge Band.  But by then I was retired to Florida.

"Would Cambridge like to host the US Marine Band?" I was asked.

"Yes," I replied, (from my safe haven in Florida)

"The concert is yours, if you are sure the community can handle it."

"Say no more!" I replied.  Then I got on the phone to Dave. He pulled things together and the US Marine Band came to Cambridge Village; played to a packed CHS gym. Largely due to the uncommon leadership skills of Dave Wilkie.

And that's how tiny Cambridge came to host a concert by the premier military band in the world.

Hope to hear from you soon!!

Pauline
